Our Story
We were born and raised in Prince Edward Island where we both grew up within farm culture. We moved to Alberta for work as many islanders do. While in Alberta we followed our roots and became involved in many agriculturally related avenues. As we were living in a city, Molly obtained a university certification in urban agriculture and used this to design and develop self-sustaining community gardens for at-risk youth and teach home preservation courses through metro continuing education, low-income opportunity and the city of Edmonton. She has been a speaker and instructor at events such as “Eat Alberta” and “Shovel and Fork”, presenting topics including: home preservation (canning), planting for preserving and planting an edible landscape. We are also founding members of “Operation Food Rescue Edmonton”(OFRE), A group focused on gleaning fruit/vegetables that couldn’t be picked and would go to waste. This food would be donated to the food bank and other food security agencies.
Winters are long and cold in Edmonton, so we’ve grown our own crops inside with hydroponics, a small aquaponic system with tilapia and also using vermicompost from our worm farm. We had laying hens as Edmonton had an urban hen & bee program . Many of our neighbours had bees and we would spend time learning and working with them.
We spent most weekends rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking in the rocky mountains where we learned how to forage for wild edibles and mushrooms which led us to start growing culinary mushrooms at home such as oysters, shitake and lionsmane.
When the ocean started calling, we eventually moved home to PEI in 2022 to work the land. We are now building a sustainable homestead in the hopes of sharing our agrarian passion with our fellow islanders.
